The following is a checklist to be used by the Wake Canine Search and Rescue Training Officer and his/her appointees to evaluate the operational readiness of the SAR Basic Field Team Member.  This list is meant as the minimum requirement for Operational Status as a SAR Basic Field Team Member.  Upon completion of the skills checklist the Search Commander will consider the member for Operational Status.

 

NOTE: These skills may also be obtained by attending a NASAR sponsored FUNSAR class and then taking the SAR Tech II exam. See NASAR site for more info.

 

Outdoors/Improvisation Skills

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to construct a fire.            

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to construct a cathole.

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to construct a 24 hour ready pack and

                  demonstrate its use.       

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to construct a shelter using a plastic tarp

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to demonstrate traveling skills used for

                  his/her environment.

 

Navigation Skills

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to identify, define, and demonstrate the

                  use of the following terms or concepts.

a.    contour lines

b.    true north and magnetic north

c.     declination

d.     determining distances

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to describe at least five parts of the

                  compass and demonstrate the ability to use it to plot a course on a map.

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to demonstrate the ability to perform the

                  following navigational functions:

a.    orienting a map to compass and terrain

b.    obtain and follow a simple compass bearing

c.     obtain a back azimuth

d.    measure distance by pacing

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to take bearing in the field and transfer it

                  correctly to the map and obtain a bearing on the map and transfer it

                  correctly to the field.

 

   _____   The Field Team Members is able to demonstrate the ability to navigate

                  during daylight and nighttime hours.

 

Active Search Skills

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to define and demonstrate the following:

a.    control line

b.    guide line

c.     guide right 

d.    guide left

e.    guide person

f.      trail tape/ribbon guide

 

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to describe and demonstrate at least

                  five searching and tactical skills used by field searchers.

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to describe and demonstrate the

                  considerations for handling evidence associated with the following

                  situations.

a.    crash scenes

b.    dead bodies

c.     injuries

 

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to define and demonstrate the functions

                  of these search crew positions:

a.    radio operator

b.    navigator

c.     pacer

d.     search crew member

 

Mantracking Skills

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to demonstrate the use of a tracking stick.

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to demonstrate the method of labeling a

                  track.

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to demonstrate the procedures used by a

                  tracking crew.

 

Rope Skills

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to demonstrate the ability to correctly tie

                  these knots:

a.    figure eight loop

b.    figure eight bend (follow through)

c.     water knot (overhand bend)

 

   _____   The Field Team Member is able to demonstrate the tying of an improvised

                  harness.
